About Me
Well, you’ve come this far. Which means you’re either: A) My mother (hi mom!) or B) An internet stalker who’s just flat out run out of better options. In either event, I’m happy to have you aboard!
From the beginning:
I grew up in western Pennsylvania, about a forty-five minute shot east of Pittsburgh. And, although I had the whole daydreaming thing down pat (some would say I excelled), I never really gave much thought to writing. Of course, I read a good deal, and, as with most journeys into fantasy fiction, mine began with The Hobbit.
My next stop was Penn State University, where, among many other things, I finally put pen to paper. ‘I’ll write a book!’ I thought. ‘This idea is sure to be a best seller!’ What I had, in actuality, was a sliver of a sliver of an idea and no clue how to write. Jump forward a bit, and that book I began ten years ago I’m just now putting the finishing touches to.
It wasn’t constant writing, of course. My book was something I picked up from time to time, adding a chapter here, re-hashing some poorly written earlier chapter at some other point. I was in college – there were many more… important… things to occupy my time.
For one, freshman year, I met my wife. Obviously, she was not my wife at the time, but I was pretty sure, early on, that I could trick her into it.
We got engaged soon after college and, with my BS in mechanical engineering in hand, I followed her to grad school in North Carolina. My book, in some version of ‘complete’, followed as well.
I tried my hand at a few short stories. The results, are, well, quite tragic; the stories are safely hidden within a manila folder in my file cabinet. The world is safe… for now…
A few things were put aside with the birth of my daughter – subsequently she has taught me how to be a daddy. There are certain things, once learned, that can never be unlearned: Some, invaluable life lessons and changes, others, well… if you’ve ever fished a floating turd out of the bathtub, you know what I mean.
During this time, I also finished (for about the seventh time) my book, and decided to attempt to get it published. Somehow, that led to a visit of a science fiction writers’ forum, which in turn led me to writing short fiction once more. I’d say it’s going much better this time around, and, though I’ve placed my book into ‘almost finished’ status once again, I’m quite happy with my current writing progress.
That takes us to now. I’m currently just south of thirty and have taken my writing from ‘occasional’ to something I actively work at every week. If nothing else, I’m both enjoying my ‘job’ (mechanical engineer) and my ‘hobby’ (writing). We’ll see where it goes from here…
